Kinetics of phase ordering of nematic liquid crystals in a confined geometry.

چکیده
Employing a time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau model, we investigate the phase ordering kinetics of nematic liquid crystals confined in a narrow pore. We consider various orientations of the surface field and compute domain growth laws and scaling functions. In the absence of any anchoring field we find that ~and in contrast to a confined binary liquid mixture! mere confinement of the liquid crystals is insufficient to produce slow growth of the nematic domains owing to the vector nature of the order parameter. In the presence of a strong homogeneous anchoring, the system quickly reaches a nematic state. On the other hand, for homeotropic anchoring, the liquid crystal takes on an XY character and the growth law exponent crosses over from 1 2 to 1 4 as the field strength is increased. @S1063-651X~96!10105-7#

Investigation into the temperature dependence of isotropic- nematic phase transition of Gay- Berne liquid crystals
Density functional approach was used to study the isotropic- nematic (I-N) transition and calculate the values of freezing parameters of the Gay- Berne liquid crystal model. New direct and pair correlation functions of a molecular fluid with Gay- Berne pair potential were used. These new functions were used in density functional theory as input to calculate the isotropic- nematic transition den...
متن کاملContinuous paranematic-to-nematic ordering transitions of liquid crystals in tubular silica nanochannels.
The optical birefringence of rodlike nematogens (7CB, 8CB), imbibed in parallel silica channels with 10 nm diameter and 300 microm length, is measured and compared to the thermotropic bulk behavior. The orientational order of the confined liquid crystals, quantified by the uniaxial nematic ordering parameter, evolves continuously between paranematic and nematic states, in contrast to the discon...

In this paper, the director distribution is calculated for a nematic liquid crystal, in the cell with different surface anchoring conditions and external fields. The effects of finite and infinite surface anchoring on molecular orientations for one dimensional geometry are discussed. In these situations, the planar alignment is considered. Then, in a two dimensional geometry the planar and homo...
متن کاملStructures and Structural Phase Transitions in Confined Liquid Crystal Systems
Discussed are two numerical packages for computing equilibrium structures of liquid crystals. The first uses Frank elasticity in a rectangular geometry in two spatial dimensions. The second uses a tensor order parameter and Landau-deGennes free energy in the geometry of a finite circular cylinder. The Frank code is being used to study the phenomenon of the “stripe phase” in thin nematic films i...
متن کاملNematic-isotropic phase transition in a liquid-crystal droplet.
Possible phases in a nematic liquid crystal confined to a spherical submicrometer droplet embedded in a solid polymer are analyzed in terms of a Landau — de Gennes theory. For a droplet with a radial structure we show that the strength of the nematic-polymer interfacial interaction affects the nematic-paranematic (partially ordered isotropic phase) phase transition and may in addition induce a ...
